Asian Art Museum and a peek into Castro Confidential

On Wednesday, I finally made it to the Asian Art Museum in SF to see the Secrets of the Maharaja exhibition as well as Sanjay Patel’s Deities, Demons, and Dude’s with ‘Staches.

The Maharaja exhibit was amazing! All the robes and jewelry that the royalty of India wore; I’m talking diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls, silver, gold…and all the hookahs and spice jars and games they played. The exhibit also showcased the decoration and adornments of the elephants for when they were decorated for processions and ceremonial events. I highly recommend this exhibition. It’s only $12 for students and $17 for adults to see the Maharaja exhibit as well as the rest of the museum and you get the audio for free!

I’ve just recently become interested in more contemporary Indian and Asian art from the Contemporary Asian Art class that I took last semester and Sanjay Patel’s animations of the Hindu gods are sa-weeet! I’m tellin ya they are so cool! I bought the poster book of them and have been showing my friends and looking through it non-stop! Here’s what it looks like:

So, after the Museum, my friend Makiko and I met up with Kyle and took muni to the Castro for Happy Hour! First we went to this club/bar called the Lookout. We sat outside, upstairs and had a great view of the Castro Streets below us. We got Margaritas and Chips and guac there and after headed to Harvey’s and once there Makiko and I ordered pear ciders and Kyle got a Bloody Mary. I was starving by this point and I ordered a Chicken Tostada, which was amazing and my friends took the liberty of devouring it with me. On our way back to the Muni station we got cookies at HOT COOKIE. best snickerdoodle ever!

2012 so far…

It’s only a week into 2012 and I already have had a nice relaxing four day vacation and a New Year’s I will never forget!

On New Year’s I went to Sea of Dreams, with Santigold, Beats Antique, and Aman Tobin! All of my favorite people accompanied me and we had the time of our lives!! It was a night I will never forget! Waking up in SF the next morning was amazing! It was a clear, sunny, beautiful day and we went and got coffee and breakfast at Java Beach and spent the afternoon at the beach! I can’t wait for this year! It will hopefully be a big year with lots of amazing adventures!

Today I just got back from a quick vacation to Soda Springs! Unfortunately there was absolutely no snow but it was still freezing cold. We drove to Boontown, NV the first day and went to Cabela’s, the biggest outdoor shop ever! We went shooting and played games and cooked all our meals! It was a nice trip with some great friends! I wish there was snow though so we could have played in the snow and gone snowboarding!! Hopefully we will get back up there once it snows!

New season of Shameless started tonight! Cant wait for this season it is gonna be great!

I also cannot wait to begin the The Girl Who Played With Fire, I just finished the 1st book and saw the new movie (INSANE)!!! Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me, an Xmas gift from my sister is another book i can’t wait to begin!

I think I am going to start a new thing where at the end of every post I list my 5 favorite songs of the week, which will make me post more and listen to more amazing music!

A San Fran Halloween!!!

Last week was Halloween and I have to say that it was one of the best Halloween’s I have ever had! My friends and I got a huge group together and went out in SF. We started off the night hanging out at a couple of friend’s apartments in the Sunset getting ready, dancing, and of course taking shots of lime vodka! After missing a couple L trains we finally got one and started heading to the Castro. Once we got to the Castro, we realized how crazy it is on Halloween! Cops everywhere, costumes everywhere, people everywhere…we couldn’t handle it and got right back on the L towards Polk st. Once we made it to Polk st. we headed to Big Foot Lodge where they were having a bingo tournament. This place is so cool, they have taxidermy on the walls and Yogi bear cartoons playing on the tvs. After playing a few rounds of bingo, we headed across the street to Cinch where we got $4 shots and super strong drinks. *thumbs up* The last bar we went to was by far my favorite! Vertigo. They have a great DJ all the time, a fairly large dance floor, great drinks(pineapple infused vodka actually had pineapple chucks in it yummmm) and an covered outdoor area! After the bars closed a few of us went and got THE BEST DONUTS EVER at Bob’s Donuts and then pizza after. Luckily I did some research and found a cab company that was giving out free cab rides on Halloween, and we got our cab back to the Sunset for free! Such a great night with my closest friends! Cant wait to keep having great nights to remember!

CSS @The Fillmore!

On Thursday, Oct. 6th i went to one of the best concerts of my life! CSS is a group from Brazil and I started listening to them in high school. Their song Music is My Hot Hot Sex was my favorite song for zoo long and then i discovered that all their music was amazing. Some of my favorite song include, Lets Reggae all Night, Move, City Girl, Hits Me Like a Rock, Jager Yoga, and La Liberacion.

The show was at the Fillmore in SF and my friend Kyle went with me! The opening act was a group called Cookie Dough and to my surprise they were a group of drag queens!! It was amazing!! check them out in the Castro every Thursday Night at The Edge Bar !!

The next group was MEN and they were amazing as well. JD Samson is an amazing musician and the rest of the band killed it! Check them out here!!

I don’t exactly know what I was expecting to happen next, but I was soo excited for CSS to start! The band came out and started getting read and then LOVEFOXXX came out in a cape and a kitten mask and started singing the first song and I was hooked! CSS is soooo full of energy and they are all so happy and LOVEFOXXX is crazy!! Love her! She jumped in the crowd a few times too! To be honest I was completely enamored by Luiza Sa, the guitarist. She is just such a great musician and so beautiful! love her!!! So basically I never wanted this show to end but when it did I completely amazed. CSS has so much energy! I ended up getting the set list and Luiza’s guitar pick! And then as we were about to leave we saw LOVEFOXX and Luiza taking pics with everyone! So I got pics with both of them and they signed my set list!!! SO AMAZING! Definitely check out CSS if you haven’t heard of them, your life will change! CSS

Wines of France

This is my essay for my Food, Wine, and Culture class and I thought I would share it with you all tonight. I thought it was all very interesting. I even have a bottle of Tavel one of the most popular Rosés from the Rhône Valley.

There are many famous regions in France known for their wines. Alsace, Champagne, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire Valley, Rhône Valley, and Languedoc are probably the most well known regions that produce the most popular wines. According to ZagatWine, “France’s variety of growing conditions couldn’t be better suited to wine. Mediterranean, Atlantic, Alpine, river and continental influences all come into play, helping an amazing array of grape varieties to thrive”. France is known as one of the oldest countries in Europe that produce wine. Greek voyagers planted some of the first vines in the 6th century. “French winemakers produce a variety of different styles and types of wine. Applying some generalizations on major varietals, regions, and appellations makes it easier to solidify an understanding of French wines” (Laloganes p. 174).
The regions of France are usually divided into three parts based on climate and varietal of grape. The northeastern section of France including Alsace, Burgundy, and Champagne, the Western section with regions like Bordeaux and the Loire Valley, and the southern or mid-central sections of Languedoc and the Rhône Valley. These sections and regions all vary in climate, varietal, and technique.
Alsace has a long history being claimed and reclaimed by Germany and France, spanning from 1648 until 1945 when Alsace became part of France for good. Alsace is the nation’s largest producer of white wine. “The primary grapes of Alsace are Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat, and Pinot Blanc. Arguably the greatest wines of the region come from the Riesling varietal” (Laloganes p. 178). Alsace has two areas that are wine-specific. The Bas Rhin is more in the northern part of Alsace and has a climate that is fairly cold and wet. Haut Rhin is located in the south and supports many higher quality vineyards. There is little rainfall and lots of sun, which allows the grapes to ripen longer and have better flavor. “Wine production in Alsace traces its beginnings to the early centuries of the Roman Empire, when the conquering forces introduced viticulture and vinification” (Prial par. 2). The Alsatians use a lot of the same varietals as their German neighbors, but Alsatians let their wine go through a longer vinification process. “Alsace is similar to California in that wines are named after the grape type predominantly used in vinification, rather than the locale where the grapes were harvested, as is the usual French practice” (Prial par 3).
In the Western part of France is the Loire Valley. It is one of the world’s greatest regions of white wine. “Loire produces various styles of wine, such as sparkling wine, dry table wine, off-dry table wine, and sweet dessert wine” (Laloganes p. 179). The Loire region is not as prestigious or well known as some other regions in France, but they have turned to organic and biodynamic farming as well as winemaking to become better recognized. This adds distinctiveness and marketability to Loire wine. Similar to Alsace, Loire is most well known for their white wine varietals, including Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadet. They also produce some reds, like, Cabernet Franc and Gamay varietals. “Wines are almost always unblended and are typically unoaked or lightly oaked. The philosophy of winemaking is to showcase the true nature of the grape” (Laloganes p. 180). The Loire Valley has its own regions, which are separated into the Central Loire, Touraine, Anjou-Saumer, and Pays Nantais. In the Central Loire region, Sauvignon Blanc is distinct and “known as Blanc Fumé because of the smoky, or flintlike, aromas it possesses” (Laloganes p. 180). Touraine’s climate it what makes this region stand out. The climate offers good cultivation conditions for white as well as red wines. One of the most popular and celebrated wines in Touraine is the Vouvray appellation. These wines are mostly produced from Chenin Blanc and made in wines ranging from dry to sweet. Anjou-Saumer is a large producer of dry white wines, but is also famous for the production of sweet wines. In the Pays Nantais region of the Loire Valley, a light, dry white wine is prominently produced, sometimes with a Muscadet, or a light spritz. This region of Loire Valley is located near the Atlantic coast in the central part of France.
The Rhône Valley is located in the Southeast part of France, and divided into two main areas, Northern Rhône and Southern Rhône. “The Northern Rhône terrain is steep and cooler, whereas the Southern Rhône is flatter, sunny and warmer. Nearly all Rhône wines are red, followed by rosés and whites” (Laloganes p. 187). Northern Rhône predominantly produces red wines, like Syrahs, but also produces small amounts of whites. The Syrah grape can be cellared for long periods of time and continue to improve for decades, so the older the Syrah is the better the taste. In Southern Rhône, the red wines are blends of grapes and sometimes contain up to a dozen red and white varieties. Some rosé appellations include Tavel and Lirac. “Rosés of Tavel often produce medium bodied wines with refreshing acid levels” (Laloganes p. 188).
The history of French wine goes all the way back to the 6th century, and that is why France is known as the inventor of wine. French wine has the pretty bottles, the pictures, the appellations, the classifications, books, maps and vintages. All these aspects make French wine so popular. According to ZagatWine, “The world’s 10 most expensive wines are all French, and France makes more wine than any other country.”

3 months of nothing and then the start of something…

After friends nagging about me not blogging for so long (Sierra!), I’m backkkkkk! I cannot believe how long it has been since I have posted, seriously sooo long! Honestly, I didn’t have a particularly eventful summer, so there is not much to blog about there. I did go on a few short weekend trips.

June

Soda Springs with the gang (17 of us!) It was soooo nice the whole time, but the lake was still frozen! we went shooting, climbed through an old abandoned train tunnel, played in the snow, and had margarita hour everyday. It was a great 4 day getaway with great friends!

July

Sea Ranch with the fam. Sea Ranch is one of my favorite places to go and it is only about 2 hours away from Sonoma. We rented a beach house for 3 nights and we went on walks, played soccer on the beach, wiffle ball in our cul-de-sac, skip bo every night, and made breakfast/dinner each day except for one night when we went to the Sea Ranch lodge for dinner. It was a great relaxing weekend with my family, which I don’t get to spend a lot of time with because we are all always so busy.

August

back into school mode, and working a lot and just wasting away the last days of summer. I have a pretty large school load this semester too.

So far I love my Art Since 1945 and Art and Politics classes. In my art and politics class, we have been talking about Murals and I had never really studied murals before this class, but they are fascinating! We talked a lot about Diego Rivera and his political murals and we watched a film about one of the most famous muralist, Judy Baca. She has produced murals all over the U.S. including at USC, Cal State Monterey Bay, and the Great Wall Murals in the L.A. Aqueduct.

September

I saw Taylor Swift in concert with my sister and cousin. Taylor was amazing live, she really has a beautiful voice! It was an amazing concert.
I’ve gone to two Giants Games this month so far, and hopefully another one next week! It is finally September Baseball and the Giants are on a winning streak! Lets hope this continues!!!

well that’s all I have for now! I’ll keep updating regularly, I hope, and trying to start a new blog soon about cooking/eating/yummy food!!

Rain Rain Go Away….

I cannot believe how long it has taken me to update on here! So much has happened in the last 3 months, I literally don’t know here to start. This post might have to come in stages because its going to be a long one. lets start at the very beginning…a very good place to start (haha name that movie)! At the end of March, I went to VEGAS with Jessica and we had an amazing time! We stayed at the Polo Towers on the strip, right next to Planet Hollywood! We saw the lions at MGM Grand, the water show at the Bellagio, stayed out till 6am, saw Fergie, and went to the best club (Chateau) and saw Flo Rida perform for freee! After Vegas we drove all the way back to Santa Barbara, surprised Kyle (AKA got free cupcakes) and then I hung out in Santa Barbara for a few days and got to see old friends and seriously had an amazing, relaxing Spring Break! April was a crazy school month, started to get “Senioritits” even though I didn’t graduate (got a whole nother year) ON EASTER SUNDAY, I had to go on a Geology Fieldtrip, which I was pretty pissed about, but it ended up being a lot of fun! We went to Pt. Lobos and spent the whole day in the woods, at the beach, walking around learning about ROCKS. At the end of the month, I headed down to L.A. for Kyle’s Graduation from Pepperdine! I got lucky and got to stay down there for 5 days, so it was like a mini-vacation! On Friday I went shopping at the Grove with Kyle’s Fam, saw Rob Lowe and Julia Stiles (LUMEN!!!), saw Kyle get awarded for being awesome in his specialty (Sorry I forget the correct name), watched like 5 movies, saw Kyle Graduate on the windiest day ever, got my computer stolen (yep I know), made a bombbb dinner, and got to relax and hang with my favorite person for 5 whole days! MAY, ohh the month of May, fun-filled May. Sister’s and Brother’s b-days, Gigantes Game (Cinco de Mayo), Finals, Celebrating (graduations, friends returning from Europe), Jazz Festival (Sheryl Crow), Movies–Bridesmaids, Pirates (twice), Hangover II, etc. And now, its only 6 days into June, and it’s already been the craziest month out of them all. Kyle came to Sonoma before he jetted off to North Carolina for the summer, my Grandparents from New York came to Sonoma for my Brother’s Graduation, my Bro graduated high school, saw X-Men: First Class (BLAHHHH), have eaten some amazing food (Sugo-Petaluma, Old Chicagos-Petaluma, Saddles-Sonoma, Harvest Moon-Sonoma), Gloria Ferrar, being with family and staying up late with friends, all I need is the sun!!!!

Today was non-stop. Woke up at 6:30 to take Grandparents to the airport. Got home around 10am, watched an episode of Justified (MUST WATCH SHOW!!! TIMOTHY OLYPHANT!!!!), went to Petaluma with Erin and saw Water for Elephants (SOOO good, read the book too!!), came home and went to Napa with the Sis to go to TARGET! Got home and went to Haci, and Micheocana with Kris, David, Kels, and Bonnie and watched Duplex! “ohhhh Blueberries….” Came home to find the Giants game still on, didn’t end till 5 min ago, bottom of the 13th Giants 5 Nationals 4. March Madness

this month is almost half over, but it has already been a crazy, amazing month!

The first week of this month, Kyle was in Sonoma/SF for his spring break and I finally got to see him, as well as some of his amazing friends from LA! We had a dinner party at his house, and I made my orange pound cake and a spaghetti squash greek salad! We caught up, played catchphrase and had lots of laughs. The next day I met Kyle and Brittany for lunch and shopping. We ate at the Slanted Door and then went to Westfields. Jessica was also in town that weekend and we met up for a drink Friday night and caught up! The next night Sierra, Katie, David, Kris, and I drove to SF to celebrate Alyse’s 22nd birthday! We started at Hooters and then went to Polk St. It was a blast!

This last week was pretty crazy. I had two midterms, one in my Art and Architecture of Islam class, and another in my Geology class. The art one went well but the Geology one….ehhh get back to me on that one. At least his curve is nice and if I get a “C” I will be more than happy! After my midterms I was ready to get wild, and on Saturday, David, Kris, Nikki, and I went to SF for the St. Patty’s day Parade and Festival! It got pretty crazy, but it was soo much fun! Lets just day I plan on taking it easy this week.
